Canine Freestyle or Heelwork to Music is a choreographed musical program performed by handlers and their dogs. The object of musical freestyle is to display the dogs in a creative, innovative and original dance, using music and intricate movements to showcase teamwork, training and style. Heelwork to Music incorporates traditional dog obedience and the art of dressage with the inclusion of musical interpretation, dance elements, and costuming with an emphasis on non-standard obedience movements. Heelwork-To-Music routines create a visually exciting display which is enjoyable to watch and which is equally enjoyable to dogs and handlers executing the programs. Heelwork is a showcase that truly demonstrates the joys and fun of bonding with your pet.
The Santa Cruz Dog Training club is a casual group of dog loving people and canine companions. Our group is made up of people and dogs with a variety of levels of experience and backgrounds. Some of us are new trainers; some have a little more experience. Some of our dogs are seasoned performers and competitors; some are young or inexperienced. Some are mutts; some are purebred. Some we’ve raised since puppyhood; some were rescued as adults. Some are very well trained; and a few are a little less than well trained. What we all have in common is a dedication to furthering the connection we have with our dogs and to promoting kind, humane, positive reinforcement training methods in our community.
